Client:Babylon Governorate / Hilla Municipality
POC: Babylon Governorate, contract department.
Project Scope:
The Street 40 Development Project encompasses comprehensive maintenance and rehabilitation of Street 40, The street is 2700 m long extending from Bab Al-Hussein to the Al-Um roundabout. Key elements include:
Rehabilitation of the median divider island and adjacent green areas, including the installation of a sprinkling and drip irrigation system.
Renovation of side sidewalks and entrances to secondary streets, involving the demolition of old sidewalks and damaged road furniture.
Preparation and laying of gravel, pouring reinforced concrete, constructing new sidewalks and medians, installing concrete bricks, and creating new pedestrian crossing areas.
Implementation of a three-layer asphalt pavement (leveling layer, binder, and surface layer).
Complete street furnishing with necessary amenities.
Organization and processing of agricultural equipment and work for cultivating sidewalks and medians, increasing green spaces, and installing modern drip sprinkler systems.
Challenges and Solutions:
The project faces significant challenges due to Street 40’s importance as a major thoroughfare in Hilla City, characterized by heavy car and pedestrian traffic, and dense commercial, educational, and governmental presence. Key challenges include:
Managing complex and intersecting networks of water, electricity, sewage, internet, and telephone supplies, which require meticulous attention to avoid service disruptions.
The absence of as-built drawings or plans for a substantial portion of these networks necessitates cautious excavation to prevent damage.
Ensuring minimal disruption to traffic flow, which requires construction work to be primarily conducted at night and during off-peak hours, thereby incurring additional technical, administrative, and financial burdens.
