Daquq Bridge Rehabilitation and Maintenance Project
Description: The bridge is located on one of Iraq’s main arterial roads that connects the central and southern regions of the country with the north. It plays a vital role in ensuring traffic flow across one of the largest and most hazardous flood valleys, Wadi Shay.
The project includes the demolition and removal of 48 concrete spans due to the impact of floodwaters on the foundations of the old bridge, which caused it to go out of service during flood seasons and periods of heavy rainfall.
A new bridge structure is being constructed through the installation of deep foundations consisting of 67 piles with a diameter of 1.5 meters and a depth of 25 meters. The works also include the construction of pile caps and reinforced concrete columns for 21 piers, in addition to two vertical abutments.
Furthermore, the project involves the fabrication and installation of 207 concrete girders along with their elastomeric bearings. Approach roads are being constructed from both sides in accordance with the project specifications and requirements. Expansion joints (T-100) will be installed, along with steel railings and lighting poles, in line with the approved project drawings.
The scope of work also includes the construction of a hydraulic regulator downstream of the bridge to reduce and control the velocity of flowing water within the valley.
